Apple Touch-Screen Netbook in Q3

apple-netbook

Rumors have been flying around the web that a company called Wintek recently contracted with Apple to sell them a new touch screen. The purpose behind this, tech blogs claim, is that Apple will release a new netbook in the third quarter of this year.

If this is true, this may confirm some of the rumors that Steve Jobs has been thinking up new, innovative products ever since he stopped coming into work. Given Apples other products (the MacBook Air comes to mind) this new netbook complete with touch screen could be quite a contender in the netbook market provided apple is willing to price it competitively.

Drat, one more thing I want that I likely will never buy.

adamo

Some products are highly anticipated be cause we’ve seen the features and they are must-haves. But Dell has efficiently created a buzz in the tech world by shrouding its new Adamo line in mystery. Dell set up a website devoted to Adamo that is nothing more than a list of press releases about Adamo and a place to input your contact information so they can keep you up to date with all the exciting Adamo news. I subscribed to Adamo, but so far, no news.

The Adamo website is intriguing for two reasons. First, it is very reminiscent of the artsy Mr. Plow commercial for Homer’s snow plowing business on “The Simpsons”. Second, the website doesn’t actually do anything. It doesn’t shed light on Adamo - all the press releases were written by people who are just as clueless about it as you. After all the pondering and speculation I have done, one question has come to the forefront of my mind. Namely, “How are they getting away with this?”

With this much hype, the product behind it will have to be beyond amazing not to be seen as one of the most Epic Fails in recent tech history. Gutsy. At the press conference where the first Adamo product was introduced, Dell reps wouldn’t let anyone turn it on. Who knows, maybe it’s a time machine. The way I see it, if you’re going to build a time machine into a laptop, why not do it with some style.

cell-phone-1

For a gadet guy like me, the iPhone exemplifies the kinds of things I look for in a phone. But what if you’re a chef, lawyer, hermit or gamer? What kind of a phone do you look for? The chef gets the Motorola Cleaver, the lawyer gets a BlackBerry, the hermit gets no phone and the gamer gets this one.

Cellphones aimed specifically at gamers is an emerging market, and has been wide open ever since Sony decided not to release a PSP phone.

This guy even appears to fold up small enough not to be a pocket nuisance when games aren’t being played.

Circuit City on Its Last Legs

By Andy Morrise | Filed in General | No comments yet.

best-buy

I stopped by Circuit City today and boy was it lonely. They will remain open for another two days and the horror will continue until then. I was in the store when the last of the flat screen TV’s, a 52″, was purchased; I have no idea what the purchase price was, but I know it was 50% off of something.

I was unsurprised to find that there are still several overpriced items available. The primary offenders were the laptop computers, one of which I know you can buy for about what CC wants over at Offi-Smacks. The only difference being that at Office Max the item is new (not a display model) and the keyboard has both the “C” and the “V” keys.

Other than that, the only things left are numerous cords, some huge speakers and, of course, the display cases and shelves. I saw an episode of “Chuck” not too long ago where they tried to raise extra money by having a dance party in the Buy More (ripoff of Best Buy). That kind of idea absolutely never works. But it might work for Circuit City.

business-card

Market Splash has the best online business card creator in the world and is the only company out there that gives away truly free business cards, and you still aren’t using them.

Their creation environment is like having an adobe product without having to pay for it and when I say the cards are truly free, I mean you don’t even have to pay for shipping. They are one of the two companies in the world that allows users to upload vectorized images, without flattening them or changing them in any way, for use on customized business cards. They produce the cards with their logo on the back and you pay nothing.

Don’t you feel terrible. Don’t you feel remorse for what you have done. Well, that’s all I’m going to say about poor Market Splash.

Vista Print is terrible.

Bloopers?

The following is content from an old post I thought I would resurrect. If you’ve seen it before, just ignore it.

I found this classic package of briefs as I was cleaning out my grandparents basement and I thought I would share. I have no Idea where they came from, but my grandpa always finds things that are cheap and buys in bulk: Read the remainder of this entry »

Pennies Just Got More Valuable

By Andy Morrise | Filed in General | 7 comments

penny

As many of you know, my brother Ben created an iPhone application that makes a game out of “geocaching” pennies. While I am his brother, typically one of his closest collaborators and co-conspiritor to the bitter end, I still don’t know how the scoring works.

Last night I thought it would be fun to go and find one of these pennies to see how the app worked. Michelle, Christina and Julianne were feeling adventurous enough to come along, so we set out at about 9:00 last night. The penny we were after was on a railing by a walkway on the exit 275 overpass. After displaying deer-like agility and coming off only a little worse from some altercations involving a red sports car and a mammoth SUV, we earned our prize. Actually, I should say I earned it, or possibly stole it, since I am the one who still has it.

The application worked like a charm, but still has a very rudimentary UI and lacks a few features I would love to see. Since I have direct contact with the developer, I may be able to get some of these features added.

1. User names. I would like to see user names on the high scores page on each penny and I would like to have a user name myself.

2. Messaging. I would like to be able to leave a little message for the person who put the penny on the overpass.

3. Number of users. I would like to know how many users the app has.

I also wish that there was a little bit more in the description most users give. I put some nail polish on the penny I picked up last night and I plan to hide it not in plain sight. I will be very descriptive when I lay out where the penny is and what it looks like.

asus-eee-pc

So the new Asus Eee PC looks like a MacBook Air. Big deal. Actually I think this is an exciting development even though I know the specs will be nothing compared to Apple’s xtra-thin laptop. I figure since most netbooks have no optical drive, a weak processor and generally poor performance for anything that isn’t basic computing and surfing the web, they should always have been this thin. Unfortunately, most of them are fat little guys who mock you by looking like a computer but not really performing like one.
