StarTrekRumors.com

I like Star Trek. Yes, you can chalk that one up on the long list of things that make me a geek, but I don’t care. I’m more of a Next Generation fan myself, although I like the original movies better than the Next Generation movies. As such, I’m somewhat interested in the new Star Trek that is due out next year. I thought it would be fun to get in on the Star Trekness or it all so I went out and bought myself a new domain name: StarTrekRumors.com. I myself was surprised that this domain name hadn’t been gobbled up already as most domain names with any meaning have been taken. I’m not sure what I’m going to use it for yet. I’m hoping that I can get a group of Star Trek fanatics to join my quest to find rumors and content about Star Trek and post it. We’ll see what happens.

Looking for a scary movie

Thursday, November 8th, 2007

Andy and I watched “The Ring” on Halloween night. It’s probably one of the more creepier movies I can think of. I had however seen it before so this time wasn’t as scary. I am however looking to find a really good scary movie to watch. I can’t be anything rated R, so I realize that that limits my choices, but I’m sure their’s something good other there I haven’t seen yet. If anyone has any suggestions, I would like to hear them.

Here’s a nice clip of “The Ring” for ya:

Technology in movies

Friday, October 12th, 2007

The other night Andy and I watched the movie “Disturbia.” My wife didn’t want to watch it because she had heard it was scary, so we decided to watch it. It wasn’t scary. One of the scenes consists of the main character’s friend running through the murderer’s house. The friend is holding a video camera as he runs, so you can see what is going on. The part that I find intriguing about this part is that after he friend comes back the main character is looking at the poor quality video that is on the camera and somehow zooms in beyond the possibility of the resolution of the camera to see a dead body whose face is visible through some vent holes. Unless he’s working for the government, I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t have access to any kind of software that do what he did.

How to like the Harry Potter movies

Wednesday, August 15th, 2007

As you may have noticed many of us, including me, have a hard time being a fan of the Harry Potter movies. I recently went and saw the latest installment of the Harry Potter movies: Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix. This movie is based on the 5th book of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series. Being one of my least favorite books in the series, The Order of the Phoenix is not one that I have read many times. I’ve only finished the book two times and the last time I read it was over two years ago. I think this was the key element in my enjoyment of the film. It had been so long since I had read the book that I wasn’t entirely sure what they cut out of the movie. When my wife said she didn’t care much for it when it finished I had to ask why. She went on to list about 20 things that they didn’t get right. As I remembered the various plot points she talked about I realized that they did miss a lot, however it didn’t damper the fact that while I was watching the movie I didn’t remember these things and had therefore actually enjoyed the film. That being said, I don’t think that if I had not read the book at some point I would have enjoyed the movie as much. The thing I like the most about the Harry Potter series of movies is that they remind me how much I love the books. That alone is good enough for me.

Transformers: My Review

Saturday, July 7th, 2007

As much as I personally hate reading reviews about movies, I’ve decided to write my own. The reason why IÂ hate reading movie reviews is that nobody really has the same opinion as me. They probably watch the movie with an entirely different set of criteria. Anyway, here we go!

The following items are on a scale from 1 - 10:

Plot: 6 - The plot wasn’t great, but they were kind of stuck with a plot, being Transformers and everything. The one big thing that I could believe was that they main character in this story, played by Shia LeBeouf, got the girl at the end. I’ll be honest, this was a bit of a stretch. There’s no way that this guy could have got that girl.

Acting: 6 - I didn’t feel like the characters really enveloped the character’s personality. Some of the lines felt forced as though it was unnatural for them to be saying those things. In there defense, the script was no well written.

Dialogue: 5 - The dialogue was kind of week. I didn’t feel like the characters were saying things that the character’s would actually say. Yeah, weird I know, but you’ll understand if you see it.

Action: 9 - There was some pretty impressive action sequences in the movie which were greatly helped along by the awesome special effects. The Transformers themselves looked quite impressive and I think they did a good job at making them look like they were actually fighting. The best part about the action was that when the Transformers transformed, they made the classic noise (there are those who know what I’m talking about).

Entertainment Value: 8 - Although the plot wasn’t incredible and the dialogue and acting were also not stellar, the action in the movie was great. Since the movie was mostly action, the entertainment value was high.

In conclusion, the movie will not be winning the “Best Picture of the Year” award at the Oscars, but it was enjoyable to watch and I would probably see it again.

Rated PG-13, scattered profanity, a little vulgarity, a lot of sci-fi violence
