How much for example.com?

Tuesday, February 5th, 2008

Of the few web domains that aren’t registerable(word?), I think example.com would be one I’d like to own. Example.com is used strictly for documentation and can’t be registered. My wonder is how much the domain name would go for if they ever auctioned it off. Probably a lot.

More fun with Adobe Flash

Tuesday, February 5th, 2008

I’ve been having a little fun with Flash lately and some trigonometric functions. Yesterday I built this, probably useless but fun anyway, flash menu thing. The functionality is weird, but when you view the page try clicking on the bubbles and using the up and down keys. It’s quite fun. Anyway, enjoy…

3D Menu

Here’s a picture of a flash menu I started building. It’s a pretty interesting concept that was originally found elsewhere. I just wanted to see if I could do it. Click on the image above to see the menu in action.

Gmail dominates Hotmail and Yahoo Mail

Monday, November 12th, 2007

I’ve had Hotmail and Yahoo Mail accounts as long as I can remember. I had a Hotmail account long before Microsoft owned it. I’ve used every iteration of this web email software. Yahoo mail looks pretty, doesn’t it? I’ve had a Yahoo mail account for several years now. However, I am here today to tell you that there is a much better web-based email service that blows these two out of the water. Yes, it’s Gmail. Why Gmail? It hasn’t been available as long. It doesn’t look as pretty. There is one feature that makes Gmail better than these two other services and it is the SPAM FILTER. I don’t know how many of you who have these various accounts have noticed how much spam you get in your Hotmail and Yahoo mail accounts. I get so many some times, I can’t even see the real email on the page. I rarely get spam in my Gmail account. And on top of that, when I submit something as spam to Gmail, I don’t get those types of emails ever again. I have been getting emails from joke-of-the-day to my Yahoo account for years now. I can’t seem to be removed from their list. Every day I submit it as spam and every day I go to my inbox and behold, there is another email from joke-of-the-day. It’s not even a joke. Wait, that was weird. Anyway, so all I am saying is that if you don’t have a Gmail account, get one. Move your contacts over slowly and then tell everyone your new address. I know the task seems daunting, but trust me, you’ll be glad you have switched.

Bidding on Ads

Tuesday, October 16th, 2007

I have created an interesting way to sell ad space for a website. Here’s how it works:

Each week I post an eBay auction for the ad space. When the end of the week occurs, the winner of the eBay auction gets the ad space. Then, I post another eBay auction. At the end of that auction, the winner of it gets the ad space and so on. So, the auctions are for a weeks worth of ad space. That way, people can pay as little or as much as they want for the ad space. Pretty cool huh.

New look at morrise.com

Tuesday, October 2nd, 2007

I decided to make the site look a little cooler today. I wanted to add some gradients to the site, so I did. Do you like it? I am going for a more Web 2.0ish look. I think it looks better, so there. I’ve always felt like I can trust a website more when it has a layout and design that I like.

A new website in the wings.

Andy an I have been working on a project for some time now. We have hired a programmer to complete some of the work and are really excited about. What is it? Well that I can’t tell you, at least not yet. We’re waiting until it gets completely finished before we let anything out of the bag. So, stick around to see what is developing. We should have something up by the end of the week.

dnsstuff.com: the incredibly useful tool

Thursday, July 26th, 2007

A little while back after the site going down due to the Digg effect, we were required to get some new hosting. The company where we currently host is called Midphase. The hosting option we decided to switch to is something called a VPS or Virtual Private Server. In the setup of this server the name servers that this website runs off were change from midphase.com name servers to morrise.com name servers. After waiting for almost a day for the propagation of the DNS servers, the website was still pointing to midphase.com name servers. How did I know this? A little tool at dnsstuff.com. It was very useful in helping me debug name server issues and DNS issues.

www.webpagesthatsuck.com sucks

Thursday, July 26th, 2007

I heard about this website several years ago, but it’s been a long time since I went there. The other day while I was surfing the internet looking at websites that had guidance on web design practices, I stumbled upon the link for this website again. So, I clicked on it. This point of this website is to show you badly designed websites so that you can learn from their mistakes and not use the same mistakes in your own page. The website itself is purposely badly designed so that you can learn from its bad design. My question, what can you learn from its bad design. You don’t go into a voice lesson and have the voice teacher sing badly to you so that you can learn to sing well. You’re bowling teacher doesn’t use incorrect bowling form and throw the ball down the gutter every time to show you how to be a good bowler. The whole idea of this website confuses me. I don’t want to see bad design. I can create bad design. I was someone to show me how to make good design. Is that too much to ask?
