User-generated content websites
Some of the best websites out there have their content generated by users. Some of my favorites are YouTube, Digg, Wikipedia and eBay. It’s amazing to see how these websites make money by other people bringing them content. Probably the most successful and popular sites that are based on user-generated content are YouTube, Facebook, and Second Life. It’s great. All these companies have to do is develop tools to allows us users to generate content and then we do the rest. The web has seen a fair amount of success with different kinds of media, mostly video. Audio is now become more and more popular with podcasting and MySpace’s audio capabilities. This has me thinking about the other type of general media that hasn’t been covered. A big part of our society is books. You see them everywhere. I would love to have a website that allows users to write a collaborative book. Now that would be something. This would be very difficult because of people’s various writing styles and ideas of direction of the book. I do however want to try it out sometime and I have already written a small application that would allow users to contribute and moderate the content that is written for the book.
If anyone is interested in helping with this small project, please comment to this post. I think this could be a fun project. I will probably have it finished soon. I’ve decided that I’m going to use one of the novels that I started writing as a bases for the first book. The website will probably be based around the single book. And who knows, if it’s popular enough I may even branch it off into several books.
