America’s Got Talent: The Web Developer Edition

Last night as I was taking a well-deserved break from work, I turned on the T.V. to find myself watching someone dressed up as Shakira dancing around a stage. No, this wasn’t Scrubs latest attempt at humor, it was a new episode of the hit reality T.V. show “America’s Got Talent.” As the judges put this person through to the next round I realized, “Hey, I’ve got much more talent than that. Come on!” Unfortunately, my talent involves building websites. I suppose I could take a laptop onto the stage, hook it up the a projector, and show them, but I just don’t think that would have a whole lot of appeal to the crowd. This is when I came up with the idea of:

America’s Got Talent: The Web Developer Edition

More after the jump… Here’s how it would work:

  1. Each participant would come up with an written website idea and post it at a contest-specified location.
  2. The contest entries would be posted on digg.
  3. The web community would go to digg and digg the website ideas they felt were best.
  4. The next day, the top 20 dugg ideas would be sent on to the next round.
  5. Round two would have the top 20 contestants work with a graphics designer to design the look and feel of their website.
  6. At the end of a week, the sites would be posted and put on digg again.
  7. Voting would begin.
  8. The top 10 dugg sites would be sent to the top 10 elimination series.
  9. The top 10 sites would then work with teams of developers to build their sites.
  10. Watchers would then vote off 1 website each week until a winner was crowned.

This type of show would be great for all of those people who have an awesome web idea, but are like me in that they don’t have the time or money to build or market their ideas.

Although I think this would be a great idea and would generate a ton of money, it has two fundamental flaws:

  1. I am one of these people who has a good idea, but doesn’t have the time or money to market this idea.
  2. Even if I did have time and money to promote this, nobody knows who I am. Who would enter this type of contest if it was run by me? I’ll tell you, “Nobody!”

I would love for this idea to get pushed to a popular web company like Digg, MySpace, or even Google. They could probably justify the setup time and get advertisers on board to sponsor this contest.

I would love to have some of my ideas be realized. Who wouldn’t. I know you have ideas. Let’s get them out there!
